Acknowledgement of Traditional Custodians

We pay our respects to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestors of this land, their spirits and their legacy. The foundations laid by these ancestors give strength, inspiration and courage to current and future generations, both First Nations and non-First Nations peoples, towards creating a better Queensland.

Overview

January 1974, South-East Queensland is flooding, and a mother is missing. As the Brisbane River breaks its banks, Daisy, a devout do-gooder, sets out in a dinghy with her daughter Jaz, a defiant hippie, to find her mother Lily, who has disappeared from her nursing home. Far from lost, Lily has rediscovered her half-sister Joy, who is desperate to locate the grave of their mother, Mary Wong, before Bi San (Ancestors’ Day), when the dead must be honoured. So, they begin their own search by unpacking family lore and retracing historical steps along the reaches of the Brisbane River.

White China is an epic, funny and deeply moving adventure that follows three generations of women as they rewrite their relationships in the wake of new discoveries about their Chinese-Australian family history.
