Following hot on the heels of QPAC’s Clancestry – A Celebration of Country festival, the Biggest Mobs of 2022 gathering rounded the year with a night full of music, yarns, laughter, and deadliness.
Meanjin-based Jamaican/Arrernte artist SOLCHLD, who was part of the 2022 BlakBeats cohort took to the Cremorne Theatre to share her effortless poetic writing style laced with raw, soulful vocals to tell dynamic stories with versatile sounds.
We sat down to chat with SOLCHLD about her inspirations, what makes her laugh, and how the BlakBeats program has helped her as a musician.
Who or what inspires you?
Nature inspires me. It brings me back to what is real and reminds me what it means to be human. My mother, grandmothers, aunties, and sisters inspire me. The way they love, the way they have overcome. I'm inspired by strong Black leaders and revolutionaries past and present. Their staunchness and articulation fuel my fire and reminds me why I speak the way I do. I'm inspired by the love and connection of people around me. I'm inspired by Ancestors and the guidance and strength they give me. I'm inspired by my niece and nephew who deserve to experience a world in harmony.
What song always gets you dancing?
Pressure by Ari Lennox! This song embodies a feminine power that feels so good. It's cute, sexy and graceful. The RnB/soul with a Motown flavour is my kinda groove.
What can’t you leave the house without?
Paw Paw ointment and my Yeti water bottle.
What makes you laugh?
Re-enacting Twilight scenes with my sister. There's no situation that can't be responded to with a Twilight reference. The more absurd the better. We're always on the lookout for more cringe-worthy cult classics to weave into our lives.
“You better hold on tight, spider monkey.” - Edward Cullen
How has the BlakBeats program helped you to develop as an artist?
It's providing a container to practice my artistry. It's helped me expand my knowledge of the production process and learn how to communicate my desired sound. We're being supported by a team through a process that otherwise can feel very solitary.
It's really encouraging for other people to recognise and support your potential.- Solchild
