How can our dreaming selves believe the crazy things our sleeping brains invent? How do both selves live in the same skull? And what does that say about the certainty of our waking selves that this world is real? This program investigates those two selves – and what each can tell us about the other.

In dreams, some see signs from the divine or – since Freud – the unconscious. What happens when the sleeping and waking worlds combine, such as in lucid dreaming, and why do dreams dissolve in an instant after waking? We will look to neuroscience and to social science for an explanation of how our single self can inhabit two such disparate worlds.
