Tchaikovsky Marche Slave (Slavonic March), Op.31
Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op.43
Shostakovich Symphony No.10 in E minor, Op.93
Open the caviar and say ‘dasvidaniya’ to Brisbane as you spend a night in Russia! Tchaikovsky’s recognition of the Serbian people, Marche slave, kicks off the proceedings and this tuneful opener will immediately be familiar to fans of Disney’s Aladdin, whose score borrowed heavily from the piece. Pianist Stephen Hough then performs Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, comparing the theme to a ‘crisp white shirt’ in its infinite adaptability. Then, prepare for tears as Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10 chronicles Stalin’s brutality. The third movement, believed to be a Stalin snapshot, is a chilling distorted march, while the slow-paced Finale’s bleak spaciousness reveals the Gulag prisoners’ despair.
