Neighbour is an adventurous folk-pop musical puppet with strings being pulled from the mind of Brisbane based singer-songwriter, Ryan Nebauer.
Six years of previously fronting an indie rock band taught Ryan the basics of song writing but also secured some promise of things to come, achieving encouraging milestones such as winning the National Youth Week song writing award twice, touring across the Australian east coast six times, scoring a bunch of television synchs and commissioned scores (including Under The Dome, National Geographic, Disney Channel), national and community radio air play and two nominations in the Qsong awards (now the Queensland Music Awards).
Ryan’s excitement and vision on his new solo project stems from the idea of having full creative control while still vividly displaying the band dynamic that has been occurring at live performances. The Neighbour moniker has been fortunate enough to sit alongside some great acts on gig posters – sharing stages with the likes of Bluejuice, Beautiful Girls, British India, The Cairos, Margaret Glaspy, Thelma Plum, Pierce Brothers, Ash Grunwald, Sahara Beck, Ben Wright Smith and Jack Carty just to name a few.
Upon those live performances, Neighbour is anything it wants to be. From intimate solo performances that display influences of Elliott Smith and Paul Dempsey to energetic five-piece shows with flares of rock and electronic elements that could be aligned with Cold War Kids or Big Scary. The core of Neighbour is based around solid songs that can lend themselves to multiple situations.
Two years and two EPs in have seen a bunch of a singer songwriter focused songs with support from the local Brisbane music scene, Triple J and community radio. 2017 however, sees a progression in style and the grip of freedom that Ryan has in the project. With the recent release of the electronically laced "Space Camp", followed by the up tempo folk-rock stomper Alexander Graham Bell, Neighbour definitely keeps things interesting with an element of surprise crossed with versatility.
